Mike Bottom – Biomechanics of the 3 Types of Freestyle Dominant in the World Today

Mike Bottom recently concluded his second year as the head coach for the U-M men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs after serving the last four (2008-12) as the head coach for the men’s swimming and diving team. In six years at Michigan, Bottom has done nothing but win, holding a near-perfect dual-meet record of 49-3-1 (31-1 against Big Ten opponents) while winning five Big Ten Championships (2009, 2011-14) and taking his teams to top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships in every season, including the 2013 national championship.

Universally recognized as one of the finest sprint coaches in the world, Bottom is a four-time Big Ten Swimming Coach of the Year (2011-14) and was 2013 CSCAA Swimming Coach of the Year. In his six years, Bottom has coached his swimmers to a total of eight national titles (seven individual, one relay), 68 Big Ten individual or relay titles and 29 NCAA All-Americans. Among the national champions that Bottom has coached include NCAA record-holders Dylan Bosch (2014: 200-yard butterfly), Tyler Clary (2009-10: 400-yard IM, 2009: 200-yard backstroke) and the 200-yard medley relay team of Miguel Ortiz, Bruno Ortiz, Sean Fletcher and Zack Turk (2013). In addition, a Michigan swimmer has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year in five of Bottom’s six years: Tyler Clary (2009-10), Dan Madwed (2012) and Connor Jaeger (2013-14).
