For his efforts in coaching, Dave Durden was named an assistant coach for the 2016 US Olympic team and was awarded the 2016 Coach of the Year award from ASCA. His Cal swimmers brought in 11 Olympic medals that year. Durden coached his college swimmer Ryan Murphy to take home Gold and a world record in the 100 backstroke, Gold in the 200 backstroke, and Gold in the 4X100 medley relay, at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. In his 2017 ASCA World Clinic talk “Planning a Re-Taper for The Olympic Games” Durden shares his expertise in planning to swim fast, just four weeks after swimming fast, and gives tips on communicating with swimmers during the time after the NCAAs. He speaks about setting goals for the time period with two focuses: swimming best times and advancing athletes to the Olympic team.
