Level 1: The Foundations of Coaching

The Foundations of Coaching course covers the fundamental principles of swimming and swim coaching. The course is designed to introduce coaches to the philosophy our sport, and empower coaches on the pool deck. Topics covered include using stoke drills, technical instruction and information, guidance on developing young athletes, and working with parents.   The course also offers general coaching advice.

Level 2: The Stroke School

This course builds off the material in the Level 1 School, and is designed to educate coaches on constructing the best strokes for their swimmers during practice.  The primary reason parents bring their children to practice is to learn how to swim better—This is where it starts. Topics covered include:

  • Philosophies of strokes
  • Science principles for the understanding of teaching strokes
  • The Construction of Strokes and Their Correction
  • Teaching Starts and Turns
  • Skills and Methods for Better Coaching

Advanced Freestyle & Advanced Backstroke

ASCA’s Advanced Stroke Series offer coaches all that they want to know about the history and present execution of the swimming strokes.  In this clinic, we explore how the mechanics specifically of the Freestyle and Backstroke strokes.  The courses will explore in-depth optimal technique and training of the of the strokes, including advice and thoughts from some of the elite technicians out there (such as Mike Bottom, Brett Hawke and Bruce Gemmell). The course will also include extensive video analysis and teaching ideas.  Any student of the sport cannot find a better in-depth treatment of the strokes!


About The Speaker:

This clinic is taught by Guy Edson. Guy Edson is the director of ASCA’s clinics and seminars, as well as ASCA’s Job Service program. Guy works with established clinics to add value to their event by bringing ASCA on-site schools as pre- and post- clinics events. He also creates, promotes and directs new clinics in areas of the country where other established clinics do not exist. As the Job Service Director, Guy consults with employers and coaches on a wide range of coach-employer relationship issues, contract issues, and club structure issues.
