FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Garrett Metal Detectors, one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of high-tech detection equipment with Olympic Games experience dating back to 1984, has been selected as an Official Supplier of the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah and the 2000, 2002 and 2004 US Olympic Teams.

Garrett Metal Detectors has signed an agreement with the Olympic Properties of the United States (OPUS) – the joint marketing effort between the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) – to provide the largest metal detector installation in Olympic Winter Games history with walk-through, handheld and ground search detectors deployed throughout the Olympic region at competition and non-competition venues.

Garrett Metal Detectors will install and service its equipment throughout the Games-time period and will assist in the training of thousands of police officers, security professionals and volunteers on the use of the equipment. The Salt Lake 2002 Games feature 10 competition venues with five indoor and five outdoor facilities, plus nearly 20 non-competition venues such as the Olympic Village and Medals Plaza. Garrett will also service the security and safety needs of the U.S. Olympic Training Centers in Colorado Springs, Colo., Lake Placid, N.Y., and Chula Vista, Calif.

Prior to the 2002 Salt Lake Games, Garrett is serving as the Official Supplier of metal detector equipment for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in Australia. For the past decade and a half, Garrett’s famous Magnascanner walk-throughs and handheld Super Scanners have helped safeguard countless facilities worldwide, such as schools, airports, prisons and embassies, as well as special events, such as athletic competitions, political conventions, concerts, and high-profile ceremonies like the Academy Awards.

“All of us at Garrett Metal Detectors are truly excited to be working with the Salt Lake 2002 Games in what promises to be the greatest Olympic Winter Games in history,” said Jim Dobrei, director of security sales and marketing, Garrett Metal Detectors. “Salt Lake’s extraordinary facilities are certain to attract a very large audience. We will be using new procedures with the newest equipment for checkpoint screening. After all, for the largest installation of metal detectors at any Winter Games, nothing less will do.”

“Garrett’s reputation for outstanding products and service make it one of the most trusted names among security and law enforcement professionals around the world,” said Mark Lewis, OPUS president and CEO. “Garrett will ensure that all the security equipment needs are amply covered to provide a safe and secure environment for the athletes, spectators and participants in Salt Lake City and at the US Olympic Training Centers.”

Garrett Metal Detectors becomes the 38th corporate participant – including 18 sponsors and 20 suppliers – for the 2002 Games and the US Olympic Team. Since May of 1999 when Marker, O.C. Tanner and Questar came on board, a total of 25 companies have signed OPUS agreements.

In development of a security plan for the 2002 Games, Garrett becomes the second sponsor or supplier, joining Sensormatic Electronics Corporation, which was named the Official Electronic Security Sponsor in March 2000. Products provided by Sensormatic include access control systems, video surveillance systems, asset protection systems, remote digital video transmission systems, and asset tagging and tracking systems.
