ASCA Statement on Passing of Coach Nort Thornton

Published

The American Swimming Coaches Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Hall of Fame Coach Nort Thornton.  His success at Cal Berkeley over 28 years and as a U.S. Olympic coach was extraordinary.  His impact on our sport is immeasurable.  Nort served as president and for many years on the board of directors of ASCA, and as a result coaches everywhere have benefited from his wisdom and guidance.  We extend our deepest condolences to his family and the Cal Berkeley community.

“Nort was always there with a joke and always made us (coaches) think a little bit deeper about swimming. We were grateful for being in his presence.”  – Coach Dave Salo, ASCA Board of Directors

“Nort was a real icon in our sport–a winner wherever he coached.  I learned so much from him.  I am proud to say we were friends.” – Coach Mark Schubert, ASCA Board of Directors

“Nort was a giant in our sport.” – Jon Urbanchek, ASCA Member
