Head Coach, Lake Ernie Silver Dolphins and the Hawken School
Coach Jerry Holtrey has been the Head Coach of the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins and the Hawken School since 1967. In 2011, the Hawken School swimming coach won the 23rd State Championship of his career with 21 of those coming from the girl’s team. Coaching the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins Jerry Holtrey’s swimmers have won every district championship from long course to short course for the last 42 years while holding almost two-thirds of the individual district records.
Jerry Holtrey was a member of the 1957 Huntington YMCA National Championship team. In 1963, he began coaching at the Club Olympia in Fort Wayne, Indiana after a swimming career coached by Glen Hummer (Huntington YMCA), Gus Stager (University of Michigan), and James “Doc” Counsilman at Indiana University. After a brief career coaching in Indiana and Kentucky, Jerry Holtrey took over coaching duties with the Silver Dolphins. He began a teaching and coaching career at the Hawken School in 1969. In 2008, he retired from teaching. During his tenure at the Hawken School, more than 400 Hawken swimmers earned All-American status.
Two of Coach Holtrey’s swimmers, Sharon Wickman and Matt Vogel, went on from Club O to win Olympic Gold in 1968 and 1976. The next two years, he coached in Ashland, Kentucky. At the Atlanta games in 1996 and Sydney games in 2000, Diana Munz won Gold in the 800 free relay, silver in the 400 freestyle, and bronze in the 800 freestyle.
Coach Holtrey has been Coach of the Year multiple times in the state of Ohio as well as regionally, and has had high point winners in both Senior Nationals and World Open Water Champions. Jerry Holtrey has coached on two Pan Pac teams and has been head coach of the USA- Junior teams to Barcelona, Spain and Melbourne, Australia. His swimmers have won 24 individual event titles at Senior Nationals.
